India hosted the first Global Symposium on Farmers’ Rights’ (Global Symposium) from September 12 to 15, 2023.

Venue: ICAR Convention Centre, National Agricultural Science Centre (NASC) DPS Marg, New Delhi-110012, India.

The Global Symposium was organised by the Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Rome.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, in collaboration with Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPVFR) Authority, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), and ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR) hosted the event.

The President of India, Her Excellency Smt. Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated the Symposium on 12 September, 2023. 

The Ninth Session of the Governing Body of the ITPGRFA had requested the Secretary to organise a Global Symposium on Farmers’ Rights to share experiences and discuss possible future work on Farmers’ Rights.

The Symposium provided the platform for sharing inspiring stories, innovative approaches, effective policies, best practices, knowledge and experiences, and lessons learned on implementing Farmers’ Rights, as set out in Article 9 of the ITPGRFA.

The Symposium seeks to contribute to the understanding of a range of issues, the challenges and opportunities of implementing Farmers’ Rights by the Contracting Parties and interested stakeholders, including in the use of the Inventory and Options. As requested by the Governing Body through Resolution 7/2022, the Symposium also seeks to assist in gathering ideas for possible future work on Farmers’ Rights as set out in Article 9 of the ITPGRFA.
